Your Training Resource in Hampton Roads
“We teach you to train your dog to be a better companion” HROTC was established in 1947 with the following objectives: ▪To conduct training classes for the preparation to compete in obedience trials. ▪To encourage sportsmanlike competition. Hampton Roads Obedience Training Club offers a beginner class based on simple behavior modification techniques using a reward system to teach basic behaviors which is one hour per week for eight weeks. Our experienced instructors will teach your dog to sit, down, come, walk on a loose leash, stand, not jump on you or the furniture and stay. Also included are tricks for fun. Our training methods are the most up to date positive and motivational techniques which makes training FUN. You will get answers to your questions about house training and other canine behaviors that can be troublesome. The bond between you and your dog will grow stronger as he becomes a well behaved companion and a respected member of the community. Your dog may even become certified as a Canine Good Citizen as a result of your training with HROTC. ADVANCED TRAINING For those interested in competing in obedience trials and earning titles, we can also teach you to train your dog in Novice, Open and Utility as well as the new sport of Rally Obedience in the advanced class.UNUSUAL TRAINING In the recent past we’ve had a “guest” instructor teaching the art of dancing with our dogs. Bow to your partner and do-si-do – it was great fun!If wishing to have your dog focus on you, our instructors are able to either offer an attention class, or incorporate these methods into an advanced class along with like exercises. THE BIG PICTURE Being part of the HROTC “Team” includes assisting at our Agility, Obedience and Rally trials. There are so many ways you can lend your support while you are having fun learning new tasks.COMMUNITY EVENTS Become a Canine Ambassador! Members and their dogs give programs on Animal Safety at local schools, libraries, recreation centers, even at detention centers. And once your dog has earned his Canine Good Citizen award, he’ll be ready to be tested as a Therapy Dog, able to visit local hospitals and nursing homes. What better way to give back?As a member of HROTC you can enjoy the public events we support, such as being a major sponsor in Chesapeake’s annual “Bark In The Park” where we have CGC testing and Rally run-thrus. Members have joined together in taking valuable classes, such as American Red Cross Pet First Aid. Knowing what to do in an emergency may help you to save your best friend’s life! And of course, we have great social events! We have an annual Awards Banquet where we honor our members who have been successful in putting titles on their dog(s) in the previous year. We add to the festivities by having a Gift Exchange (cut-throat style!), with one strict rule – NO CRYING! Our Summer meeting is laid back with a tailgate picnic. This gives everyone a chance to relax and talk with members that you see in class, but almost never get a chance to visit. Most likely one of the best things about the HROTC is the willingness of instructors and members to try new and innovative methods of training, always with safety and consideration being foremost. Fun is always emphasized for both you and your dog. Of course one of the objectives of the club is to encourage you to compete and earn the various AKC titles in any and all of the performance events. CLASSES and FEES Our classes are held each Tuesday evening at 7 and 8 p.m. throughout the year. Training is currently being held at Holy Trinity School, 154 W. Government Ave., Norfolk, VA 23403, but is subject to change. The courses are six weekly sessions with generally one or two weeks between each course. The cost for the course is a very reasonable $65.00, and once you have completed one six-week course, you are invited to join the club. The annual dues are $15.00 for an individual, and $25.00 for family membership. Once you are a member, the training fees are $15.00 per session, per dog. WON’T YOU JOIN US? We are sure you will agree that obedience training is FUN and the best gift you can ever give your dog and your family. Come out and enjoy the company of fellow enthusiasts. For more information you may contact one of our Trainers:
