Our Training Program

…at Hampton Roads Obedience Training Club has evolved over the years to include some of the most up to date, positive training methods in the area.

Our classes are held each Tuesday evening at 7 and 8 P.M. throughout the year in Norfolk. We are indoors at the East Ocean View Recreation Center from October through May and outdoors behind Granby High School from May through September. The course is 8 weekly sessions with generally one week between each course.  The cost for the course is $65 and once you have completed one 8 week course you are invited to join the club.

The Beginner classes are based on simple behaviour modification techniques using a reward system to teach basic behaviours such as:
sit down stand come on leash

and an off command to leave things alone and to stay off people and the furniture, etc. With these basic commands and behaviours you can teach the dog the rules of the house, have your dog evaluated for the Canine Good Citizen Test and as a future pet therapy dog.

It is a good place to start for future adventures in competition obedience, Rally-O, Agility, or any other performance event.

The advanced class is just that. Taking what you and your dog have learned in the beginner class and building toward competitive events or just a well mannered and controlled companion.  Included in the advanced class are attention, proper teaching techniques for more precise manoeuvres as in turns, sits, stays, etc., how to execute the various rally behaviours, retrieving, jumping, scent work, signals and directional work.

Fun is always emphasized for both you and your dog. Of course one of the objectives of the club is to encourage you to compete and earn the various AKC titles in any and all of the performance events. The club recognizes those teams that accomplish these objectives.
